Sweet Cakes by Melissa: A Bigoted Bakery in Jesus' Name

This takes the cake!

Recently in Gresham, Oregon, owner, Aaron Klein, of Sweet Cakes by Melissa, refused to make a wedding cake for a same-sex wedding because of his personal religious beliefs. “I believe that marriage is a religious institution ordained by God,” Klein says.

But, get this...

Klein clarified that he and his wife do not hate homosexuals. "They can buy my stuff," said Klein. "I'll sell them stuff ... I'll talk to them, it's fine."

So, let’s see if I got this right…

Klein and his wife, obviously Christian fundamentalists, of sorts, are more than pleased to take all the money they can straight from the hands of homosexuals every day their doors are opened. Then, no doubt tithe some of that homosexual money on Sundays to God and Jesus right inside the holy sanctuary of their chosen house of worship! Can you imagine that?

But!

They stop short, in the name of their lord, when it comes to selling a wedding cake with two male, or two female names inscribed upon it?

Is it just me, or does anyone else see the blatant, ignorant hypocrisy with this?

  1. I totally see it. I couldn't believe he had to add that he'll talk to them. How sad. Shame on this business

  4. They feel very strongly about the sanctity of marriage being for one man and one woman, as the Bible clearly states. Selling them a birthday cake is a totally different situation. Their wedding cakes represent their contribution to the holy matrimony of a couple as they begin their lives together as one. Very different from just purchasing a lovely sweet treat. The hypocrits are those who want their freedom to believe as THEY do, but deny that freedom to others. Find a bakery that will honor their beliefs and stop trying to make others change to suit you. IMHO

  5. When business owners are not allowed to chose who they want to sell to, we might as well live in Russia.
So he doesn't want to sell them a cake. BooHoo. Now they want to make a big stink. Why not just go to another bakery that does want their business? Get over it petty people.

    1. The girls are not the ones making "a stink". Mr. Klein was the one that went to the media so that he could drum up business for his shop which, by the way, didn't even have a business lic. until Feb. 1st 2013.

  6. If you are a business person, you open yourself to the public. Intelligent, open-minded business people know to leave their personal religious beliefs out of their business. Ignorant, bigots are quick to show their asses for what they are to the world. A cake is a cake. Don't politicize it. Don't preach a sermon about it. Just sell the goddamn thing!

  7. Yes, GJ Duerrschmidt, ignorant bigots are quick to show their asses for what they are to the world and you just showed yours. There is absolutely no reason why he should have to leave his religious beliefs outside the door of his own business

  8. I hope you will go out of business following your hateful God and then when the two of you will be starving hopefully the State will take your away so they can be raised in a loving home with loving parents whether straight or gay because maybe you missed the point but God is about love and not about hate as the two of you seem to be.Shame on you.By the way, there are better bakeries in the area.

    1. True their children should be saved by the State and placed in a loving home with parents who preach love and not hate.

  9. Same sex marriage in Oregon is illegal, so his decision to not be a part of a same sex marriage ceremony is right in step with the legal position of the State of Oregon. Is the State of Oregon going to sue itself? Are you recommending that all children should be removed from the State of Oregon because it is bigoted and hateful, or that parents should remove them to another less hateful state ? California perhaps? The voters of California voted down same sex marriage, so they must be as bigoted and hateful as Oregon, so that won't work.

    1. wrong, dumdum-same sex marriage is NOT illegal in Oregon-are you an imbecile?

  10. The question of whether Mr. Klein has the right to discriminate against the couple is still unclear, and will probably be left up to a judge - Oregon has non-discrimination laws that include protections for sexual orientation; that being said, Mr. Klein could argue that his Constitutional right to practice his faith overrides any state law.
Anonymous posted on Feb. 6 that "same sex marriage in Oregon is illegal so his decision to not be part of a same sex marriage ceremony is right in step with the legal position of the state of Oregon" - bakers aren't marrying the lesbian couple, so they are not taking part in the wedding, they're merely catering it - it's no different than if the lesbian couple brought party planners from Albertson's or Safeway - we wouldn't say those chain stores were "part of the wedding." Also, as I said earlier, Oregon does have anti-discrimination laws to protect LGBT folks, so this guy may have broken some of those laws...Again, this is in the air because he does have a constitutional right to practice his faith....

  12. It's rather curious that the the State of Oregon is in the position to compel a business to accomodate a gathering that the State of Oregon considers illegal. What then are the parameters for ctaering an illegal gathering, such as gambling? Are Oregon businesses required to do the same for brothels in Nevada? Until a few years ago, cockfighting was legal in Louisiana. Would you require a business in Texas to cater a cockfight in Louisiana?
